MATHCOUNTS 2007-2008 Information and registration
The purpose of MATHCOUNTS is to encourage interest and develop ability in mathematics among all middle school students. Each week students meet and work problems of varying degrees of difficulty. Parent volunteer coaches help the students to solve the problems by individually encouraging them to develop problem-solving methods. The weekly meetings also feature activities, friendly competition, challenge problems, games, and treats. Math teachers generally also give extra credit for attending MATHCOUNTS. On January 12 all interested Mendenhall students will compete against students in the other Livermore middle schools in a local MATHCOUNTS competition. In February two teams from Mendenhall with four students on each team will represent the school in the regional competition in Walnut Creek. The top two teams in the regional competition advance to a state competition. Mendenhall has sent students to the state competition in eight of the last ten years, scoring as high as third in state. Support for the MATHCOUNTS program is entirely on a volunteer basis from the parents and teachers at Mendenhall. We need help coaching, bringing the donuts, monitoring the students, and keeping rolls. If you can help in any of these capacities, please come to the first class on October 1 (or October 3) and/or send an email to tedperry@llnl.gov. After the first class parent coaches will receive the problems and solutions in advance so they are able to assist the students in solving the problems during MATHCOUNTS. We are also asking for a contribution of $15 (made out to Mendenhall PTSA) per child per year to cover the cost of the refreshments. On the back of this paper is a list of rules students are required to obey during class. MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships. Presidents Bush, Reagan and Clinton have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in Oval Office ceremonies, and the program has received two White House citations as an outstanding initiative. Please bring this form to the first meeting of MATHCOUNTS or turn it in to your math teacher. In order to attend MATHCOUNTS and receive credit for each session students must initial the roll and also turn in a worksheet for that session. The worksheet must show that the student attempted to work the problems and listened to the presentations. (This is a new requirement this year.) In addition, during MATHCOUNTS time: 1. Students are expected to work on MATHCOUNTS problems and avoid extraneous activities. 2. Students should not do homework or work on other subjects. 3. Students should clean up tables, chairs, and floors after class. The area should be as clean after class as before class. 4. No one is allowed to leave class before 8:15 on Mondays or 2:10 on Wednesday without written permission from a parent or guardian. 5. Students will cheerfully follow instructions from the volunteer coaches, especially instructions about seating arrangements. 6. Students will be careful with library facilities. They will not have any food on the tables that have computers. They will not use books as writing tablets, etc. 7. Each student will bring pencils, scratch paper, and a calculator to every class. We have read the above rules and understand that any student who does not abide by these rules will not be permitted to attend class. Parent (or guardian) signature _______________________________
